There are plenty of awesome things to do in Williams AZ with something in store for every type of traveler.

Williams, Arizona is known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon,” but it’s also a legit destination on its own, perched along iconic Route 66 with piney forest air and small-town Old West charm.

It’s the kind of place most travelers use as a quick overnight base, then immediately sprint toward the Grand Canyon. I did that too, for years.

Then I finally spent a full weekend in Williams and realized what I’d been skipping: a walkable Route 66 downtown, the Grand Canyon Railway depot vibe, easy outdoor adventures nearby, and the simple joy of ending the day with a cozy, neon-lit main street instead of another long drive.

Set at high elevation in Northern Arizona and surrounded by forest landscapes, Williams is perfect if you want Grand Canyon access and a calmer home base with plenty to do.

In this updated 2026 guide, I’m sharing the best things to do in Williams, where to stay, what to book ahead (train and canyon day trips), plus easy itineraries you can steal.

WEEKEND PLANS: 1–3 DAYS IN WILLIAMS (DONE RIGHT)

Pick your Williams weekend (book 1 anchor, relax the rest)
Plan Morning Afternoon Night
1 Day Depot + Route 66 stroll + visitor center Pick ONE: Bearizona OR Canyon Coaster Brewery/winery + Route 66 neon stroll
2 Days Day 1: Bearizona + downtown Day 2: Grand Canyon day (train or drive) Easy dinner + early night (tomorrow-you will be grateful)
3 Days Add Deer Farm + a lake / easy forest walk Grand Canyon viewpoints OR another “fun park” block Stargazing / cozy Route 66 nightcap
If you’re torn: do Bearizona on Day 1 and the Grand Canyon on Day 2. That combo hits everyone.

KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU PLAN

  • If you only have 1 day: Do downtown Route 66 + depot first, then pick one anchor only: Bearizona, Canyon Coaster, or Grand Canyon Railway.
  • No-car version: Stay near downtown or the depot, use Groome from Flagstaff if needed, and make the Grand Canyon Railway your easiest no-driving canyon day.
  • With kids: Bearizona first, then treats downtown. Save Deer Farm or Canyon Coaster as your optional second hit, not a mandatory third stop.
  • If you hate crowds: Start early, do downtown before midday, and avoid stacking Bearizona and the railway on the same short trip.
