Superior is one of those Arizona towns that gets dismissed as a quick stop on Highway 60 until you actually give it a weekend.

Then it starts doing something much more interesting. There is a dramatic mountain wall at the end of Main Street, a genuinely good little historic core, a boutique hotel that gives the town real overnight credibility, one of Arizona’s most useful desert gardens just outside town, and enough hiking to turn “we’ll just stop for lunch” into “why are we looking at checkout times?” That is exactly why the right base matters here.

The first time I mapped Superior properly, I almost treated it like a place where any room near the road would do because the real point seemed to be Boyce Thompson Arboretum and the surrounding desert. That would have been fine for a fast overnight.

It would not have been fine for a Main Street stay, a hiking-heavy weekend, or a trip where I wanted Superior itself to feel like the destination and not just the parking lot for the destination. Superior is small, but the stay decision still changes the trip.

  • FOR A FIRST SUPERIOR TRIP, Main Street is the safest and smartest answer.
  • FOR A MORE NATURE-LED WEEKEND, the west side works better than people think.

QUICK ANSWER – WHERE SHOULD YOU STAY IN SUPERIOR, AZ?

The best short answer is Historic Main Street Superior.

That is the strongest overall base for most trips because it gives you the clearest version of what makes Superior interesting in the first place.

You get the town itself, you get Hotel Magma and the best atmosphere, and you still stay close enough to Boyce Thompson, LOST, and Picketpost that the outdoors side of the weekend stays easy.

My best alternate is the west side near Boyce Thompson and the Highway 60 approach.

Where to stay in Superior, AZ

I would choose that first for a trip built around hiking, Arboretum time, or a quicker in-and-out outdoor weekend where downtown is more supporting character than lead role.

And Globe is the fallback I would use when I need a sturdier conventional hotel decision. It is not the most romantic answer, but it is a smart one when Superior’s own lodging pool feels too thin for the trip.

START HERE – BEST AREA FOR YOUR TRIP STYLE

BEST AREA FOR FIRST-TIMERS
For a first Superior trip, stay on Historic Main Street. It gives the cleanest feel for the town and keeps the weekend simple without flattening it into a roadside stop.

BEST AREA FOR COUPLES
For couples, Main Street Superior wins first. Hotel Magma gives the town a real boutique anchor, and downtown has enough atmosphere that the stay feels intentional rather than merely convenient.

BEST AREA FOR HIKERS
For hiking-heavy weekends, the west side makes the most sense. That side gets you faster onto the Boyce Thompson, LOST, Queen Creek, and Picketpost part of the trip.

BEST AREA FOR HISTORY
Main Street Superior is the right pick. The town’s mining-town look, murals, and the hotel itself all work better when you stay right in the center of it.

BEST AREA FOR AN ARBORETUM WEEKEND
West Superior makes the most sense because Boyce Thompson is already on that side of town and the trip stays nature-led from the start.

BEST AREA FOR BUDGET
The smartest budget play is usually not the cheapest direct Superior room. It is often Globe, where the hotel stock is stronger and easier to trust.

BEST AREA FOR A QUIETER STAY
West Superior works best here. Downtown has more personality. The west side gives more space and less town activity.

BEST AREAS TO STAY IN SUPERIOR, AZ

HISTORIC MAIN STREET SUPERIOR

✅ Vibe: colorful, historic, small-town, and the strongest all-round answer for most people.

Who it is best for: first-timers, couples, town-first weekends, and anyone who wants Superior itself to feel like the point.

Avoid if: the trip is mainly about being first onto trails at sunrise or you need the strongest conventional-hotel fallback.

Price feel: mid-range to boutique.

Parking / driving / walkability reality: a car still helps, but this is the closest thing Superior has to a stay-and-stroll base.

What becomes easy from here: Main Street dinners, murals, coffee runs, Hotel Magma, the town’s mining-history feel, and a weekend that actually feels centered in Superior.

Hotel pick:
Hotel Magma

My verdict: I would send most people here first.

This is the part of Superior that makes the town click. You wake up in the middle of the old mining-town personality, not next to it, and that changes the feel of the whole trip.

WEST SUPERIOR / BOYCE THOMPSON / HIGHWAY 60 APPROACH

Vibe: more nature-led, more edge-of-town, less polished, and best for a trails-first weekend.

Who it is best for: hikers, Arboretum weekends, repeat visitors, and travelers who care more about the outdoors than downtown atmosphere.

Avoid if: you want the strongest town feel or the nicest restaurant-and-drinks setup right outside your room.

Price feel: value to mid-range.

Parking / driving / walkability reality: a car is fully part of the plan here.

What becomes easy from here: Boyce Thompson mornings, quick Highway 60 access, easier Picketpost and LOST planning, and a trip where Superior feels like a desert trail town more than a historic main street.

Hotel picks:
Hill House near Boyce Thompson Arboretum Copper Cottage

My verdict: I would choose this side first for an Arboretum-and-hiking weekend.

What surprised me most is how much more coherent the trip feels when the outdoor plan is the headline and the room is chosen to support that instead of fighting it.

Where to stay in Superior, AZ

GLOBE FALLBACK

Vibe: more conventional, less charming, easier to book, and the most reliable fallback when Superior’s own inventory feels too thin.

Who it is best for: families, practical road trips, last-minute stays, and anyone who wants stronger hotel confidence.

Avoid if: staying in Superior proper matters more than hotel ease.

Price feel: value to mid-range.

Parking / driving / walkability reality: car essential, of course, but that is already part of the Superior trip.

What becomes easy from here: booking with less drama, simpler family logistics, cleaner chain-hotel expectations, and a fallback that still keeps Superior totally doable.

Hotel picks:
Best Western Copper Hills Inn

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Globe by IHG

My verdict: I would only choose Globe first when I had a clear reason, but that reason can be very sensible.

Sometimes the better trip is the one with the easier hotel. Superior is worth the drive back in during the day.

WHERE SHOULD YOU STAY FOR SUPERIOR, AZ?

The best Superior base depends on whether the trip is mainly about town atmosphere, outdoor access, or hotel reliability.

Choose Historic Main Street Superior for the strongest all-round answer.

Choose the west side for trails, Boyce Thompson, and a more outdoors-led weekend.

Choose Globe when reliable conventional hotels matter more than sleeping in Superior itself.

That is the real stay logic. Superior is not the kind of place where every room feels interchangeable, even though the town is small.

TOP THINGS TO BOOK (SO YOUR SUPERIOR TRIP RUNS ITSELF)

For Superior, I would book the stay first and then decide which version of the town the weekend actually wants to be.

That is the whole trick here. One version is a boutique small-town main-street weekend. Another is an Arboretum-and-hiking escape.

Another is a practical copper-corridor stop with a strong fallback hotel outside town. Once you choose that version, the right base gets much easier.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN SUPERIOR, AZ (WITH LOCATION STRATEGY)

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM

Best base: West Superior / Boyce Thompson side
Less convenient from: Globe fallback

This is one of the main reasons Superior becomes an overnight at all. The Arboretum is not an afterthought here. It is often the anchor. Staying on the west side makes that much easier.

MAIN STREET, MURALS, AND HOTEL MAGMA

Best base: Historic Main Street Superior
Less convenient from: Globe fallback

This is the part of Superior that surprised me most. The mountains at the end of the street, the restored Magma building, the old storefronts, the bright paint, the slightly cinematic little-town feel. Staying downtown lets that actually shape the trip.

PICKETPOST MOUNTAIN AND THE LOST TRAILS

Best base: West Superior / Boyce Thompson side
Less convenient from: Historic Main Street only slightly

For a hiking-led weekend, this is where the west side earns its place in the stay logic. The trail network and Picketpost side of Superior turn the town into a much stronger outdoor base than people expect.

SUPERIOR AS A DAY BASE FROM GLOBE

Best base: Globe fallback
Less convenient from: none, when the fallback itself is the point

This is the smart move when the Superior lodging pool just does not fit the trip. I would not call it the most atmospheric version of the weekend, but I would call it very workable.

Check Globe fallback hotels here.

QUICK ITINERARIES – 2 DAYS AND 3 DAYS

2 DAYS IN SUPERIOR

BEST BASE: Historic Main Street or west Superior

DAY 1
Check in and let the town set the tone. Downtown Superior works best with a slow first evening, a Main Street walk, and a proper dinner. A west-side stay works best with a sunset trail or an easy stop around the Arboretum side.

DAY 2
Give the trip one clear anchor. Boyce Thompson is the easiest choice. Picketpost or LOST works for a more active version. I would not try to force Superior into a ten-stop list. It works better when it stays specific.

3 DAYS IN SUPERIOR

BEST BASE: Historic Main Street Superior

DAY 1
Arrival and a gentle town evening.

DAY 2
Main outdoor anchor day.

DAY 3
Use the third day for the side of Superior you did not choose first, either more downtown and history or more hiking and canyon scenery.

Three days is where Superior stops feeling like a stop along Highway 60 and starts feeling like a real little desert-mountain base.

KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU BOOK

Superior has genuinely thin direct lodging inventory. That is the main reason this stay decision matters so much.

Hotel Magma is the standout. After that, the smartest move is often a local rental or the Globe fallback.

Copper Mountain Motel exists, but it is not one of the stronger current live choices. That matters if hotel quality is important to you.

Boyce Thompson is close enough to shape the whole trip. That means west Superior can be smarter than downtown for some weekends.

A common mistake is treating Superior like a quick day trip that does not deserve overnight strategy.
It does.

SUPERIOR, AZ TRAVEL TIPS THAT SAVE TIME

The area that saves the most second-guessing for most travelers is Historic Main Street Superior.

The area that works best for a nature-led weekend is the west side near Boyce Thompson.

The area that solves the thin lodging issue most cleanly is Globe.

What surprised me most about Superior is how much better it gets once you stop treating it like a roadside break on the way somewhere else. Superior is better as its own weekend, and the right base makes that obvious fast.

MAP IT

Think of Superior like this:

Historic Main Street is your best all-round base.
The west side is your Arboretum-and-trails base.
Globe is your fallback hotel base.

That is the real decision.
