Are you planning your Sedona Vortex Adventures? You are at the right place.

One of the iconic destinations in Arizona and among the popular places for many on their Arizona bucket list, Sedona needs no introduction.

Sedona receives a special group of visitors for different reasons.

These are people seeking something more profound: a connection and a deeper spiritual experience and awakening with Sedona’s legendary vortexes.

Whether you’re a spiritual seeker or simply curious about this famous phenomenon, you will find all there is to know and how to explore these mysterious Sedona Vortex locations in this guide.

WHAT IS A SEDONA VORTEX?

Sedona Vortex sites are believed to be spiralling centres of energy that are considered powerhouses for prayer, meditation, and healing.

At any Sedona vortex, the Earth’s energy is said to be especially concentrated and palpable.

These energy centres create a swirling effect that many believe can be felt by those who visit them.

From subtle tingles to profound spiritual awakenings, thousands of visitors have acknowledged extraordinary experiences.

There are many references to the unique electromagnetic fields in Sedona, thanks to the red rock landscapes high in mineral content.

Many believe that the vortex experience is attributed to the interaction of these fields with the human body.

The twisted Juniper trees that can be found in Sedona are considered to be one of the most fascinating physical manifestations of vortex energy.

It is believed that at prominent Sedona vortexes, you can see Juniper trees displaying unique and unusual spiralling patterns with twisted branches and trunks, especially at the vortex centres.

The indigenous Yavapai and Hopi have considered Sedona Vortex locations as sacred and powerful for centuries.

The tribes have been known to use these Sedona vortexes for healing ceremonies, vision quests, and important tribal gatherings.

According to Hopi traditions, Sedona is located where the earth’s energetic meridians cross, creating paatuwvota or power spots.

BELL ROCK VORTEX

  • Energy type: Masculine
  • Famous for: Energy balancing, chakra alignment,
  • Best way to explore: Easy-to-moderate hiking(many trails available)

Among the best places to watch a sunset in Sedona, Bell Rock is located south of Yavapai County, in the Village of Oak Creek.

One of the famous vortexes in Sedona is Bell Rock, one of the first red rock formations that you will notice in the city.

There are healing shops and meditation centres, as they believe the vortex area has healing properties.

The magnificent geological wonders of Oak Creek, comprising canyons and rock formations, were formed over millions of years from ocean waters before the region became an arid landscape.

During the golden hours, you will find the canyons basking in the bright orange and yellow colours, a magnificent sight to behold.

Due to its more accessible trail and gorgeous formations, the Bell Rock Loop Trail is a popular spot among locals and visitors.

Although it is a short trail, the uphill climbing will make it a 30-minute journey to get to the base section of Bell Rock from the parking area.

For more adventure, you can climb further to reach the upper portions of the rock.

You’ll find many spots with flat areas, perfect for meditating, basking in the early morning views.

Also, check out Courthouse Butte in the early morning sunlight.

CATHEDRAL ROCK

  • Energy type: Feminine and Magnetic
  • Famous for: Nurturing and emotional healing
  • Best way to explore: moderate-to-difficult hiking
  • Restrooms: Yes
  • Parking: Available and requires a Red Rock Pass.

One of the most famous attractions and among the top Sedona Vortex locations is Cathedral Rock, a stunning canyon with a series of crimson and orange-coloured sandstone buttes.

The rock formation is located in the Coconino National Forest in Yavapai County, about a mile (1.6 km) west of Arizona Route 179.

It is one of the most photographed places in Arizona.

The 1,200-foot-high Cathedral Rock is one of the spectacular Arizona landmarks that looms dramatically over almost every part of town.

You need to hike uphill, a moderately challenging trail that opens to magnificent birdviews of Cathedral Rock at 600 meters high.

The rocks glow in different colours as the sun sets, creating magnificent landscapes.

A wide, flat, natural platform allows you to witness this stunning spectacle, and no wonder it is one of the most popular spots for photographers and Instagrammers.

Often called the “womb” of Sedona, Cathedral Rock’s feminine energy creates a nurturing environment for emotional healing.

Many visitors report profound emotional releases and insights while meditating near the creek with Cathedral Rock in view.

The higher you climb, the stronger the vortex energy is believed to become.

Soak in the views of the Verde Valley and Mingus Mountain in the distance while in quiet contemplation.

Note that it gets dark quickly after sunset, so carry a headlamp, good hiking shoes and water on your way.

HOW TO REACH?

Cathedral Rock is located off Back O’ Beyond Road.

From the junction of State Route 89A and 179, drive 4.5 miles west. When you reach the Upper Red Rock Loop Road, turn left.

Then, drive 1.8 miles to Chavez Ranch Road. Turn left and follow the road 0.8 miles to reach the parking lot.

Also known as Bandito Spire, one of the beautiful landmarks in Arizona is Boynton Canyon.

It’s one of the more secluded and lush Sedona vortex sites, offering a peaceful escape from the busier locations.

The whole trail(7 miles long) leads to the popular Subway Cave, one of the best Sedona Caves.

But note that the hike to the vortex is just 1 mile round-trip from the parking lot.

Subway Cave Sedona

You will also reach Subway Cave, another spot worth stopping by for its unique formations.

Unlike the other sunset spots in Sedona on this list, Boynton Canyon Trail is not a popular place for sunset, making it a perfect spot for a secluded morning hike.

The Boynton Canyon Trail takes you through a beautiful canyon filled with towering red cliffs.

As you pass through the forest of pine trees, the landscape transforms as you begin to climb, with maple and oak trees carpeting the ground, and the views become more stunning.

The trail ends at a broad plateau from where you can admire the gorgeous views of the Canyon.

Along the trail, also check out the Native American ruins signifying the spiritual powers of the area.

At the end of the trail, you will see rock formations named “Kachina Woman” by the Hopi Tribe, which is the feminine vortex, and a small distance away, the masculine vortex knoll.

Thanks to the pleasant, positive, balanced energies of this Sedona Vortex, you’ll find many visitors often meditating here, as well as photographing the gorgeous panoramas.

Return the same way to the parking lot.

Check this complete guide to hiking the Boynton Canyon trail leading to the Subway Cave.

HOW TO REACH?

The Boynton Canyon Trailhead is located about 15 minutes from Sedona.

Take West Arizona 89a West from town and turn right on Dry Creek Road. Follow this road for two miles and turn left on Boynton Pass Road.

After driving for about 2.5 miles, turn right on Boynton Pass Road, near the intersection with Boynton Pass Road, and you will see parking on the right sometime after you take the turn.

As you drive into the parking lot, you will see the trailhead in the main parking lot, and it is easy to find, as you will find signage on your left.

This parking lot can hold about 25 vehicles and is typically filled by 7 AM during busier months. A vault toilet is available in the parking lot.

Apart from this main parking lot, another overflow parking lot is located on Boynton Pass Road, west of the intersection with Boynton Canyon Road.

Here, you will park on the side of the road because there is no parking slot available.

But note that you will still need to display a Red Rock Pass or the National Park Access Pass in your vehicle if you park here.

OTHER VORTEX HIKES IN SEDONA

SCHNEBLY HILL TRAIL

  • Energy type: Masculine
  • Famous for: Cleansing and emotional healing
  • Best way to explore: A challenging hike

If you want to get the best glimpses of the distinct landscapes of Sedona, the Schnebly Hill Trail is one of the best hikes.

This lesser-visited site offers spectacular views and is among the offbeat Sedona Vortex locations.

Popular hike among outdoor lovers, adventure seekers and photographers, this trail is not for the faint of heart.

It is one of the most extended hikes in Arizona, spanning over 26 miles, and is mainly under the scorching heat of the state.

Depending on your speed and preferences, the hike may take between 6 and 8 hours.

As such, those who go by foot to see the vortex will need to start early and be well-prepared for a long day ahead.

The Schnebly Hill vortex is known for its cleansing and purifying energy, and hence, you can feel an increase in your energy after you have made it to the centre.

However, you can also opt for this fabulous private tour that will take you on a 4X4 through this tricky canyon range, which most non-hikers and tourists commonly opt for.

Sunset in Sedona

On this tour, you will reach Schnebly Hill’s summit, where you will be rewarded with one of the gorgeous sunsets in Sedona.

From about 2000 feet high, you will see the valley adorned with the twisted maze of sandstone buttes across the desert landscape, with patches of pine forests and intricately carved limestone below.

As the sun sets in the sky, the landscape is painted with reflecting colours that transform it in surreal ways.

THE CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CROSS

  • Energy type: Feminine and Magnetic
  • Famous for: Nurturing and emotional healing
  • Best way to explore: A short walk
  • Parking: There are 2 parking lots. Free parking with America the Beautiful National Park Pass and Red Rock Pass. Or purchase a $5 Red Rock day Pass.
  • Restrooms: Yes

One of the powerful Sedona Vortex locations is the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

Imagine if modern architecture and Mother Nature decided to have a spiritual coffee date – that’s basically what happened when Marguerite Brunswig Staude agreed to build the Chapel of the Holy Cross in 1956.

Perched 200 feet high between two massive red rock formations, this architectural showoff looks like it’s growing out of the buttes, as if Sedona’s famous vortex energy decided to take physical form.

And yes, it’s an actual functioning chapel – though good luck focusing on prayer when those panoramic views are shouting “Look at me!” through the massive windows.

Sedona in January

The 90-foot cross seems to float between the rocks, creating what might be the Southwest’s most dramatic selfie backdrop (sorry, Grand Canyon).

While the chapel itself is a man-made structure, the surrounding rock formations contain several magnetic (feminine) energy pockets.

The combination of natural energy and sacred architecture creates a unique spiritual atmosphere.

The “energy” of the vortex is supposedly strongest inside the chapel, which one might expect from a harmonious, calming space.

Many people consider this vortex to be the strongest.

You have to hike up a walkway to get there. If it’s too steep, there are golf carts available to take you up.

The chapel is open from 9 AM to 5 PM and is free of charge.

Pro tip: Visit at sunrise when the light hits the rocks just right and the tour buses are still hitting snooze, or come for sunset when the whole structure glows like nature’s own stained glass window.

HOW TO REACH?

From Sedona, head south on 79 about 3 miles. Turn left on Chapel Road. Follow the winding road to the parking spaces.

COURTHOUSE BUTTE

One of the stops I recommend for those exploring Sedona Vortex locations is Courthouse Butter Vortex, located just east of the Bell Rock Vortex in Sedona.

With its location being within hiking distance of the Bell Rock Trailhead, you can easily combine these hikes on your Sedona Vortex trip.

Sedona vortex locations

Famous for its increasing energy offering cleansing, healing of trauma and aiding in spiritual growth, the Courthouse Butte vortex often attracts many as they look for quiet spots for contemplation.

The Courthouse Butte vortex is also a favorite for Shamanic practices.

There’s a moderate, relatively flat and even 4.2-mile trail loop. You can take the Bell Rock Pathway, which leads to the Courthouse Butte Loop.

MUNDS MOUTAIN

Another offbeat Sedona Vortex location, if you are into a challenging hike, is Munds Mountain, known for its vast panoramas.

This vortex comprises both the feminine and masculine energies in perfect balance.

Located east of Sedona, this challenging hike rewards visitors with solitude and uplift in their energy and moods.

It has become a popular spot for many spiritual practitioners for serious energy work.

TIPS FOR EXPLORING SEDONA VORTEXES

START THE HIKE EARLY

Since parking fills up quickly, it’s best to start the hike early in the morning, ideally around or right after sunrise.

Apart from securing parking spaces, you can hike without crowds and enjoy photographing and peacefully exploring the trail and cave.

WEAR GOOD HIKING SHOES

It is best to wear sturdy hiking shoes with excellent grip, as the rocks can be slippery after and around the rain.

HIKE AROUND SUNSET OR SUNRISE

While sunset is the popular time for planning your trip to Sedona Vortex locations, it can be crowded thanks to its popularity.

If you want to avoid crowds and love getting up early, we recommend walking around sunrise.

For photography purposes, morning and afternoon are the best times to visit the vortexes in Sedona, as the light conditions are perfect on the horizon.

If you plan to hike around sunset, carry a headlamp or a torch to help you safely get back down in the dark.

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR PATH WHILE HIKING

Keep looking at the GPS and track your trail as you hike to stay on your route and ensure you can periodically check in and confirm you’re on the right path.

RESPECT THE LAND

The Red Rock Crossing in Sedona and the surrounding areas, including the Sedona Subway Cave and Birthing Cave, are of spiritual significance and sacred sites to the Native Americans that should be respected at all times.

Do not remove anything from the area, make rock piles, or move the rocks or graffiti rocks.

CARRY SNACKS AND WATER

It is better to carry some snacks and water if you plan to stay there for a while to wait for the sunset or sunrise.

Although it may be a short hike, it can be moderately complex, mainly due to the scramble involved.

Some snacks will surely help you.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Please practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when hiking:

  • Pack out what you bring to the hiking trail.
  • Being considerate of other hikers.
  • Staying on the course.
  • Minimising campfire impacts.
  • Not approaching or feeding wildlife.

FOLLOW THE TRAIL

The final part of reaching the cave involves climbing. Take the bank climb, not the rock climb, as it is steeper and more strenuous.

ALTERNATIVE PARKING AND TRAILHEAD

If you cannot park at the Crescent Moon trailhead, you can try alternatively at the overflow parking at the Yavapai Point Parking Lot, about two miles south on Highway 179.

But note that Yavapai Point also has limited parking space, and parking here means it adds more miles. Please consider this if you plan to park here.

BRING SUNSCREEN

Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and keep yourself hydrated, as there is no shade and the trail is in the open.
